I love it all: embroidery, canvaswork, quilting, crochet. So much to do, so little time.

We Have a Winner

Hey Blog Buddies,

Last week I offered the Cool Cardinal chart to anyone who was interested.  More than one person expressed an interest, so I had a little drawing.  Before I reveal the winner's name, I'm going to make you look at the piece one more time, because it's now back from the framer's.

I'm quite happy with the way it turned out.

I'm not interested in seeing more snow this season,
so the piece will be put away until next winter.

And the winner of the chart is..

Calamity, Jr.  (no blog)

Please email me your snail mail info, Calamity,
and I'll send the chart right off to you.

Have a wonderful weekend, people.
Thanks for visiting!

Giveaway Winner

Here is the moment you've been waiting for!  Late last month, as part of the Grow Your Blog Party hosted by Vicki at 2 Bags Full, I announced a giveaway on my Grow Your Blog post.  Anyone who commented on that post was eligible to win.  The prize was to be a little something handmade by me, which turned out to be...

...this hardanger bookmark.

The drawing was once again conducted by the
Giveaway Supervisor here at Southpaw Stitcher...

 ...Molly.

After instructing me to type each commenter's name
on a small piece of paper,
fold the papers and place them into a bowl,
she began the arduous task of choosing a name.

She even stepped on the winner's name
so that I wouldn't misplace it--
or so she told me later.
(There may have been a dab of
peanut butter at the bottom of that bowl.)

And the winner is...

Congratulations!
Please send me your address information, Jayne,
so I can send the bookmark off to you!

That's it from here.
Thanks for visiting!

Grow Your Blog!

Vicki over at 2 Bags Full has organized a Grow Your Blog party--such fun!  I'm always looking to connect with bloggers that are new to me.  For those of you who've never visited here before, here is a little about me.

I live in the greater Chicago metro area (in the 'burbs)

...with my husband and rescue dog Molly.

I've done some sort of embroidery for almost as long as I can remember, and I started this blog three years ago in order to connect and share with others in the Blogosphere who craft or do needlework or have an interest in the needlearts.

 I enjoy doing cross stitch,
but my interests also extend to...

hardanger...

canvaswork...

blackwork...

and even a little quilting, knitting, crochet,
photography, music, animals... lots of things.

To promote the party atmosphere, I'll be having a little giveaway of a small something handmade by me.  Just leave a comment on this post if you want to be entered.  Deadline to enter is February 14th, and I'll draw the winning name the next day.

So have a look around and follow me if you think my little corner of the Internet might be of interest.  Make sure you leave a link to your blog so I can visit you, too.

Thanks for visiting, and party on!

We Have 3 Winners!

Hey Blog Buddies,

Today is my third blogaversary!

We were all so cute when we were three...
but I digress.

Of course today is also the day
that the three winners of my blogaversary giveaway
were chosen.
My stitch group was over this morning,
and the ladies happily obliged
when I asked each in turn to
draw a name from the bowls.

Without further ado, the winners are:

Pincushion:   Mouse (Tales of a Stitching Mouse)
Fabric:  Suztats (Suztats)
Scarf:  Caitlin Jordan (Naughts & Cross Stitches)

Congratulations, ladies!
Please contact me with your addresses,
and I will send your prize off to you.

I know Molly is supposed to draw the winning names
for any giveaways that happen around here,
but she was upstairs in seclusion this morning...
...here.  I hope I can make it up to her.
(She doesn't look too pleased, does she?)

Have a wonderful day,
and thanks for visiting!

Giveaway!

Hey Blog Buddies,

I can't believe it's been almost three years since I started this little blog.  Time does fly when you're having fun!  So in order to celebrate, a giveaway is being held.  For my Third Blogoversary Giveaway, there are three prizes.

Since we are close to Valentine's Day...

...a stitched heart pincushion.
It's a Ewe and Eye and Friends design,
and my first finish of 2014!

Next, an assortment of 28-count linen and evenweave,
good for smaller projects:

Last but not least, a crocheted scarf:

 There will be three winners.
To keep it simple, all you have to do to enter
is be a follower of this blog and leave a comment on this post
letting me know which prize you'd most like to win.
You can name two or even all three, if you can't decide.
But, alas, there's only one prize per person.
Anyone, anywhere can enter.

Deadline to enter is midnight Chicago time,
January 20, 2014.
Winners will be drawn on Tuesday, January 21, 2014.
Good luck!

And thanks for visiting!

Spring has Arrived

Hey Blog Buddies,
Spring has arrived, at least here in the Chicago area.  We had a sunny, mild day yesterday, which prompted me to finish-finish Erica Michaels' Random Thoughts of Spring.  I did get the piece mounted and framed, but...
...the black color on the frame has got to go!
It looks a little funereal to me for a spring piece.
I got some green acrylic paint yesterday,
so the black will be just a memory soon.
The changes I made to the design were:
I omitted the bottom row of shamrocks,
and I changed the word "blarney" to "showers."
I love the way the name of the season
is done in Assisi embroidery on these designs.
The fabric is a 30-count springy green overdye
which you can see a little bit from the photo.

I recently entered a giveaway that Chris was having at
I wasn't the grand prize winner,
but she drew two extra names out of the goodness of her heart,
and I won a bunch of goodies from Market:

Clockwise from top right:
DMC coffee/tea mug, 4 of the newest WDW floss colors,
an easel floss keeper, a lovely card,
small notebook and, last but not least,
a small Whitman sampler full of cho-o-ocolates!
Thanks again, Chris!

And speaking of the Nashville Market,
Linda from The House of Stitches was invited to
our guild meeting this week.
Alarmed because I was running low on stash -- :p
I bought a couple of things:

Lizzie*Kate's Flowers Limited Edition Kit and
Tiramisu from Glendon Place.

She also brought the La-D-Da trunk show,
and since I have almost no Halloween charts (cough, cough)
I got:
There was only one of these charts left--what can I say?
This one will probably be displayed all year long...
...once I get a moment to stitch it.

I think Linda should come to all the meetings!

Well, that's it from here.
Hope you have a grand spring (or fall) stitchy weekend!
Thanks, as always, for visiting!

Blackwork Exhibition

Hey Blog Buddies,
I got the latest copy of NeedleArts magazine in the mail today, and, being the blackwork fan that I am, when I saw the cover, all I could say was "oooooooooo!"
The Embroiderers' Guild of America (EGA)
is having a contemporary blackwork exhibition at their
headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky from now
through the end of June.
The cover features one of the prettier pieces on exhibit--
and there were a bunch of very "interesting" pieces
illustrating the story inside the magazine.
Now that I've seen selected photos of these beauties,
there may be a road trip to Louisville in my future!

In other news, I was the winner of Sharon's giveaway!
I got this cute Purple Heart chart
by Ewe and Eye and Friends,
and a bunch of limited edition GAST overdyed floss,
in an array of happy spring colors.
Can't wait to stitch the heart!
Thanks again, Sharon!

I've made some progress on
Variations on a Theme of Rhodes:

The sheaf stitches are new, as are the small squares.
I'm actually a little farther along than this photo shows,
but I stopped at a point where the elements were not symmetrical,
and didn't want to photograph the piece that way.
(I'm a little nutty in that regard.)

I went to a scissor holder class on Saturday.
It's my first painted canvas in almost forever.

Hey, I mounted it on the stretcher bars!
Does that count as a start?
This project should be a lot of fun.

Last but not least,
my right mitten and left hand are very happy
that I completed mitten #2.

I will be wearing these when I go out this evening.
They have already seen action at
the local home improvement warehouse store
earlier today.

Well, that's it for now.
Hope you had a fun, stitchy weekend.
Thanks for visiting!

We Have a Winner!

Hey Blog Buddies,
Thanks for the wonderful response to my little giveaway!  I always have so much fun when I do these.  I really appreciate everyone who follows this blog and all the kind comments that I receive throughout the year.  I honestly wish everyone who entered could win!

Well, our Giveaway Supervisor (Molly) had to get into the act again this year.  I think she just wants to have her photo up on the blog!  I put a little dab of margarine on the bottom of a bowl and threw all the names in.  (Without the margarine, she would have just sniffed and walked away.)

This bowl was a little too big
for the amount of names that were in it.
It took quite a bit of sniffing around
before she knocked a name out.

Then she had to be dragged away
because she was not done investigating the bowl.

Sooo...

...whose name is that?

It's Anne of Doll's Musings who commented:

Wow! What a generous giveaway! Congrats on your 2 years of blogging! It goes by fast doesn't it?!Hmm, I started stitching when I was 9 I think. Fav techniques...hmm...I like to start stitching with the loop method if I'm using two threads. I try to make my stitches lay flat but I find it hard sometimes. I love using my Qsnaps and scroll rods to work on my bigger projects!

Congratulations, Anne!
Please email me your snail mail address
so I can send out your package.

That's it for now.
Hope everyone had a great, stitchy weekend.
Thanks for visiting!

New Start: Canvaswork Class

Hey Blog Buddies,
January has turned out to be a very busy month, stitching-wise, here at The Southpaw Stitcher.  I've put stitches into 12 projects (the usual rotation is about one project per week) and finished 7 of them, and the month isn't even over!  Most of them were small projects, or projects left over from 2012, but still.   I signed up for a canvaswork class which was held today, and now I have a new start to show you:

This is the start of Variations on a Rhodes Theme by
Freda's Fancy Stitching.
Like the name of the project says,
all the stitches are some type of Rhodes stitch.
I couldn't get the colors right
no matter how hard I tried.
The center square is gray/purple
and not green/burgundy
(it's Watercolours Flagstone),
and the aqua isn't quite as intense.
There's nothing like a canvas full of Rhodes stitches
to generate an immediate wow factor.

Unfortunately, this little beauty must be set aside.
I'm stitching on a valentine-themed piece
for Jo's Secret Stitching Sweetheart Blog Hop.
I'll be keeping this one under wraps until the 14th of February.
Click here if you'd like to join in the fun!

Finally, don't forget to check out my giveaway,
if you haven't already.
The last day to enter is tomorrow,
January 27th at 11:59 p.m. Chicago time.
Click here to find out all about it.
Good luck!

That's it for today.
Hope you're having fun this weekend.
Thanks, as always, for visiting.

The chart for Plum Street Samplers' Hares' Christmas
(good as new)...

...kitted up...
36-count vintage Buttercream linen (actually is new)
and all the called-for GAST overdyed threads
(slightly used, but should be enough to finish the project)
Or you can use them on whatever strikes your fancy!

And since we all can use more linen:

A sampling of some smaller pieces
of 32- and 35-count linen--great for ornies or other smalls.
And let's not forget the little cloth ort bag--
handy for when you're stitching on the go.

leave a comment on this post;
be a follower of this blog; and
answer the following questions:
when did you start stitching and
what are your favorite techniques?

Easy-peasy!
That's it for now.

Ooops!  I forgot to mention when the drawing will be
first time around.
What a ding-dong!
Deadline to enter is 11:59 p.m. CST

I'll draw the winning name on Monday, the 28th.

Good luck, and thanks for visiting!

The Molly Giveaway: Results!

Hey Blog Buddies,

This morning was the Big Drawing.  Molly was presented with the names of those of you who entered her giveaway in the hope that lightning would strike twice and she would again be able to choose just one lucky person as the winner.  Could she do it?  Fresh from a run with her canine buddies at the dog park, we led her to the Dish of Names...

Whoopsie!  There's two names on the floor!
(Maybe she couldn't concentrate
because she hadn't had breakfast yet.)

But not to worry--I had a plan.
Now we had Two Finalists!
The two names went into the dish
and we all held our collective breath...

Cowabunga!  We have a winner!

Happy Baker??  No way!!!
(Full disclosure:  Happy Baker is a personal friend of mine.)
Congratulations, Joyce!

"Wait a minute," Molly said.  "I picked two names.
You need to look at the second name."

"Why?" I asked.  "The other person is the runner up.
I don't have two sets of charts."

"No," said Molly, "but need I remind you
that you have a number of ort bags?  She should get one.
It's The Molly Giveaway, after all.  I decree it!"

So, the other Finalist, the winner of an ort bag, is:

Lynda, whose blog is A Cozy Little Place for Stitching.
Congratulations!
Please email me with your address, Lynda,
so I can send out your ort bag!

More Disclosures:
Yes, small treats were put into the dish
to encourage our Giveaway Supervisor to pick a name.
No big black dogs were harmed during this procedure!

Thanks to everyone who entered
and regaled us all with stories about your animals!
This was fun!

The last thing Molly said I should do
to wrap up her giveaway
is show you photos of Those Who Went Before.
So, here they are:

circa 1983

From the right, Maxine, our first dog, adopted as a 9-week-old
from a breeder-exhibitor.  She was not "show quality."
She was an only dog for six years, until I began volunteering at an animal shelter...
Then we adopted Moonshine, the zany yellow lab/staff,
my shadow, my baby, my favorite.  Look at those big, brown, saucer eyes!
On the left, Governor, was a senior citizen (10-12) when we adopted him.
We called him the world's oldest half-dead beagle,
but he lived out his last 4.5 years with us.

circa 1990

Here's Frazier, our 15-lb.Maine Coon cat who just loved dogs,
and Agnes, our second basset--both adopted from the shelter.
With four dogs and one cat, we were now one animal
over the max according to local ordinance.
My shelter volunteering had to come to an end.

Time passed, the original four died of age-related ailments,
and Agnes was left by herself and none too happy about it.
Enter Mandy, adopted from another local shelter in 1994,
one of the sweetest dogs I've ever known.

circa 1998

She had her ears back at the shelter and she looked a lot more like a mix.
Upon arrivng at our house, the ears went up and we realized we had ourselves
what appeared to be a purebred German Shepherd Dog--or very close.
Agnes (at 12 years of age) perked up the minute they were introduced.
They lived happily together for three years.

After Agnes left us at age 15, Mandy was very lonely.

circa 2006

So we adopted Timmy, our third basset (left) to keep her company.
We adopted him from basset rescue and he had issues:
easily bored, very smart and big-time separation anxiety.
You can just imagine.
Timmy stories would be a blog unto themselves.
Timmy was a "breedist" (wasn't comfortable with breeds other than bassets),
so when Mandy left us (at only age 10 in 2003), we got another basset, Beulah (right).
She was Timmy's opposite:  easygoing, mellow and low maintenance.
He seemed to calm down (a little) after she arrived.

Timmy left us first (at age 12) in 2009, then Beulah became an only dog.
You may have noticed her photo in my sidebar--she's co-founder of this blog.
She stayed around just long enough to help me launch it,
then left us a month later at age 13.

We were dogless from February to September of last year.
I didn't know if I even wanted another dog.
Then I saw Molly's photo on the Internet,
and the rest is history.

If you've read this far and are still awake, you certainly have staying power!
Thanks for reading, and for visiting!

The Molly Giveaway!

Hey Blog Buddies,
Today is our dog Molly's Gotcha Day,
the first anniversary of the day we adopted her.

She's such a cutie, but I'm somewhat biased.
In honor of this special day, we're having a giveaway.
Uh, no, she isn't the giveaway!

It's a modest little giveaway.
If you're a reader of this blog, you'll recognize the charts...

The chart for Needle Delights Originals' Rainforest Revisited,
the chart for Plum Street Sampler's Boris,
and one of my little ort bags, for good measure.

To get a chance to win,
just leave a comment on this post
and answer two questions:
How many, and what kinds of companion animals
have lived with you over the years?
Feel free to go into as much detail as you like.
If the answer is none, that's OK, too.

I'll start off:
I grew up in a city apartment that didn't allow pets,
but we did have an assortment of goldfish
and a couple of small turtles from the dime store.
Sad, I know.
As an adult, I made up for lost time.
Here they are, in order:
Maxine, tri-color basset hound;
Moonshine, yellow lab-staff;
Governor, tri-color beagle;
Frazier, orange mackerel tabby cat;
Agnes, tri-color basset hound;
Mandy, black-and-tan German Shepherd Dog;
Timmy, tri-color basset hound;
Beulah, tri-color basset hound (there's a pattern here!).
All these guys and gals are now in dog heaven.
Frazier, too--he absolutely loved dogs, and it's a good thing he did!
And finally, Molly, our black lab/pointer/scent hound mix,
adopted from the humane society a year ago today.

Your turn!

Deadline to enter is midnight, Chicago time,
on Sunday, September 23, 2012.
Molly and I will draw the winner's name the following day,
and post it on the blog.
Make sure you include a way for me to reach you.

Molly is ready for her close-up!

She wishes you good luck
and thanks you for visiting!
